This is for the step 4 in #499:

Rewrite some snippets of code to take advantage of new Python 3 syntax if it improves code quality or speed, or if the used functions are deprecated in 3.7.

  • Change API deprecated in 3.7 to new API
  • Use importlib and importlib.util functions (e.g. in the place of bare __import__s)
  • Add function annotations to public API
  • ...
