After adding the Geofence .war and .jar files it breaks the 'Authentication' link in Geoserver.

Basically it gives com.thoughtworks.xstream.security.ForbiddenClassException. It this something that needs to be fixed by setting GEOSERVER_XSTREAM_WHITELIST?

Yes, the fix is in 2.8 and master, but not on 2.7.x yet.
